The Maryland Renaissance Festival 2024

The Maryland Renaissance Festival, or Renfest as most call it, is hands-down one of the best events I go to every year. Now, I haven’t been to other Renaissance festivals, but from what I hear, this one ranks as one of the best in the country. Whether that’s true or not, I can’t say for sure—but what I do know is that our’s is pretty spectacular.

I've been coming to this festival since I was a kid, and it still has that magic that makes you feel like you’re a kid again. It’s like going to Busch Gardens or Disney World, where you just kind of let go and immerse yourself in this whole other world. For me, Renfest is one of those places that’s full of tradition and comfort. The food, the jousts, the costumes—so much of it has stayed the same over the years, and there's something so reassuring about that.

One of the first things you’ll notice when you walk in is the atmosphere. It’s like you’re transported back to some old-timey village straight out of a fantasy novel. The buildings are wooden, the pathways are rustic, and everyone is dressed in Renaissance costumes. The vendors and shopkeepers even play along by calling you “my Lord” or “my Lady.” I’m a huge fan of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, so this kind of vibe is totally my jam. And the best part? You don’t have to dress up, but if you do, you’ll fit right in. People-watching at Renfest is epic. Some costumes are simple, and others are so elaborate that you wonder how people managed to craft them.

A lot of festivals or events like this make you pay extra for shows, but here, all the entertainment is included in the ticket price. You’ll find magic shows, comedy skits, and musical performances without the pressure to tip. It’s one of the things that makes the atmosphere feel so relaxed. You can just wander around, catch a performance, and laugh without worrying about pulling out your wallet every five minutes. The only things that cost extra are food and some of the activities like rock climbing or ax throwing.

Speaking of food, let’s talk about the eats! The food at Renfest is a whole experience by itself. Classics like turkey legs, steak on a stick, and ribbon fries are all big hits, but my personal favorite has always been the fried cheese with spicy marinara. It’s a staple—one of those things that hasn’t changed since I was a kid, and thank goodness for that. They’ve also got some quirky options, like cheesecake on a stick, macaroni and cheese on a stick (I mean, who doesn’t love food on a stick?), and Italian ice served in half an orange.

Now, here’s a little pro tip for you: near the Globe Theater, there’s a pretzel vendor who makes his own mustards—horseradish, chipotle, and maple. If you’re nice, he’ll let you sample them, and trust me, they’re worth it. Each year I buy a few jars as long as he is not sold out. That said it’s like a speakeasy, you have to ask him, since there is no sign.

Then, of course, there’s the joust. This is the main event that pulls in the crowds. It’s more than just two knights on horses—there’s swordplay, spearing rings, and even a war chariot now. They’ve really upped their game over the years, and it’s become this intense, dramatic performance with slightly different storylines each year.

If you’ve got kids, don’t worry, there’s plenty for them to do too. Face painting, hair braiding with flowers, and even a playground area with a pirate ship and swings. There's a giant wooden slide that costs a dollar to go down, which is a huge hit with the younger crowd. Please note the premium activities like face painting and hair braiding all cost extra as they are done by vendors vs paid actors like the shows.

Shopping is another huge draw. You’ve got all sorts of handmade crafts—jewelry, art, blown glass, and of course, costumes. One of my favorite spots is Raven Glass, which sells these incredible handmade glass marbles that are absolutely mesmerizing. There’s also a glass-blowing demo in the middle of the festival grounds, and watching the process is both relaxing and fascinating.

There’s just so much to see and do. Every time I go, I find something new to enjoy, but at the same time, there’s this comforting familiarity. Renfest has been a tradition in my life for as long as I can remember, and it’s one of those places that I’ll probably keep going back to for years to come. In fact they have been in the same location since 1985 and only seem to be becoming more and more popular. So much so, it is common in September to see the tickets get sold out and for them to route the traffic to ease some of the local congestion.

It’s not just about the food or the shows; it’s about the entire experience of being transported into another world, even if only for a few hours. So, if you're looking for an unforgettable fall adventure that blends history, fantasy, and top-notch entertainment, the Maryland Renaissance Festival is the place to be. It’s the perfect way to escape reality, even for just a day, and create some lasting memories. Whether you're a longtime visitor or it's your first time, there's something truly magical about the festival that will keep you coming back year after year.
