Herald Harbor is a CDP and a growing semi-planned unincorporated community in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. It is located 10 miles from Annapolis on the Severn River. The name of the CDP, and the community within it, are derived from the Washington Herald Newspaper. The paper promoted its subscription service by giving away plots of land in the area as “summer home” plots. The community is blessed with gorgeous views of the Severn River and quiet peaceful streets. Many residents of Herald Harbor are wealthy landowners and their families or wealthy retirees. The Herald Harbor Citizen’s Association is the heart and focus of the community. It offers citizens a chance to be involved with their community.

In the beginning, the land that would one day be Herald Harbor was a plantation of beautiful orchards and farmlands. In the 1880s the land was known as Marsh Plantation and belonged to the Marsh family. The lands were resplendent with a brick mansion, out buildings and slave’s quarters. A young entrepreneur, Henry E. Hall bought 551 acres, including the parts on which the brick mansion sat, and he moved his family in. Hall had big dreams for the land, he planned to start a shipyard with housing for the workers and he planned a brickyard. Unfortunately, both failed to come to fruition. In the end he planted a peach orchard. In May of 1924, the Washington Herald purchased 460 acres of land from Halls children. The land was purchased to be a summer retreat/colony real estate venture. By June of the same year, the Herald reported that 3,000 of the plots in the colony had already been sold. Soon there were bathhouses, a boardwalk, dance pavilion and dock constructed and visitors/potential buyers coming in droves and a community was born. Over the years, the community has continued to grow and thrive.

Today the CDP spans approximately 2.4 square miles, 1.7 square miles of land area and .8 square miles of water. It is an affluent community with a predominantly white-collar workforce. However, it is still a mixed workforce with white, blue and no-collar workers. By 2000, the median household income in the community was 73,893 and the median family income was $83,812 and the per capita income was $34,189. In 2010, the population was 2,603 and the population density was 1,546 people per square mile.

Homes for sale in the community and neighborhood primarily range from one to four bedroom and had one to three bathrooms. Plots of property, however, are ranging from not quite a quarter of an acres to up to near a half an acre. Current available home prices in Herald Harbor range from about $110,000 up to about $525,000. The community is warm and friendly, perfect for dogs and children.
